What Is a Fiber Optic Splice Protection Sleeve?

A fiber optic splice protection sleeve (or fusion splice sleeve) is a heat-shrink tube placed over a fusion splice. It has three parts: a cross-linked polyolefin outer tube that shrinks with heat, a hot-melt EVA inner tube that flows and seals the splice, and a stainless-steel strength member that keeps the bare fiber from bending or breaking.

After heating, it forms a rigid, sealed, transparent protector around the splice point — restoring mechanical strength without affecting optical performance.

What length splice protection sleeve do I need?
60mm is the global default for single-fiber splices and works with almost every fusion splicer. Use 40–45mm when your splice tray is compact or you need higher density. FTTH drop-cable splices typically use 45–60mm sleeves with one or two steel needles.
Single-needle vs double-needle FTTH sleeve?
A single steel needle suits a straight drop-to-pigtail splice. A double needle adds rigidity and is used where the splice carries more strain or two strength members must be held parallel, such as drop-to-drop joints.
Do splice protection sleeves affect optical loss?
No. The sleeve does not touch the fiber core, so it adds no measurable insertion loss. The hot-melt adhesive has a long shelf life when stored sealed and dry; the steel member prevents micro-bending over the service life of the splice.
